What is NLP?

Neuro: The nervous system (the mind), through which our

experience is processed via five senses:

Why is NLP so useful in brining about self-empowerment?

All behavior has a content (what a person does specifically), a pattern (when and where the behavior manifests itself), and an internal process that generates this pattern. Of the three, neuro-linguistic programming is least concerned with content. This sets it apart from self-help approaches that focus onwhat a person does and why he or she does it.

NLP is far more interested in how a person effects a given behavior. In answering this “how” question, looking at behavior patterns is far more useful than studying the content of the behavior itself. To examine patterns, we ask questions such as these:

  • What kinds of stimuli lead to what kinds of behavior?
  • What kinds of problems evoke what kinds of response?
  • What context is most likely to induce a certain behavior?

Once patterns of behavior are understood, we can identify the starting point and the ending point for the process(es) behind them. At this point we can zero in on the process and modify it. Working at the process level allows us to disrupt counter-productive patterns and enhance patterns that are helpful. This, in turn, gives Neuro-Linguistic Programming great leverage in bringing about self-improvement.

Coaching is a professional partnership between the coach and a client that supports the achievement of results based on goals set by the client. Through the process of coaching, clients develop the skills and carry out the actions needed to successfully achieve their goals.

Coaching is about you moving from where you are now to where you want to be. For that to happen you have to be honest about where you are now, be prepared to think carefully about what you really want and be open to trying out new things. Your personal coach helps you find your own answers. Coaching is a structure that provides support and a framework for change. You can expect that coaching will lead you to insights and new ways of thinking and being, as well as introducing you to new and different behaviors and skills.

How does NLP Coaching work?

The client chooses the focus of conversation, while the coach listens and contributes observations and questions as well as concepts and principles which can assist in generating possibilities and identifying actions. Coaching accelerates the client’s progress by providing greater focus and awareness of possibilities leading to more effective choices. Coaching concentrates on where clients are now and what they need to do to get where they want to be in the future. Coaches recognize that results are a matter of the client’s intentions, choices and actions, supported by the coach.

An experienced, professional NLP Master Practitioner or Trainer who is also a Certified Coach is a greater resource to anyone seeking help with a goal or a problem because such practitioners are not out of their depth when the water gets deep. They can professionally guide you to the resolution of deep emotional, self concept, behavioral and relationship issues and move forward in ways which ordinary coaches cannot.

How long does it take?

It depends on what the client wants to work on. A specific outcome could be a one off session. Life Coaching and Executive Coaching is a longer process and usually 10 sessions over a period of time (minimum of 1 week between sessions and maximum of 1 month).

The number of sessions will vary depending on what is needed. This offers flexibility to fit in with your lifestyle and to meet your needs, so there is no standard schedule.

How does Breakthrough Coaching work?

Breakthrough Coaching is working at a deeper level to uncover the root cause that is holding the client back from having the life they truly want, desire and deserve.

There is a pre-breakthrough session to fully explain the process and techniques involved (NLP, Time Line Therapy™ and Hypnosis).

The Breakthrough session is a 1-day process and includes 2 additional follow up coaching sessions plus specific tasking to guarantee the client get’s the result(s) they want.

How do I know if I need Life Coaching or a Breakthrough session?

If there are 1 or 2 areas of your life that you would like to improve and make changes, then life coaching is a great way to move forward.

If you are stuck in your stuff, your life just isn’t great, work could be better, your relationship isn’t good, your health of fitness needs working on… and there is something that is holding you back, then we recommend breakthrough coaching.

How would I be held accountable to complete tasks and reach my goals?

That depends on you. Your NLP Coach must first get to know you to find out what your reasons are for not completing certain tasks. Or for completing them in a way or speed that is below your potential. Everybody needs a different approach, depending on the story behind our behaviour.

Some of us like to disobey, others have an issue with authority, want to be in control and hate being told what to do, and others have inner saboteurs disguised as low self esteem or fear of their own brilliance, etc. And there are also people who benefit from learning NOT to complete tasks, because they are too much of a perfectionist or find it hard to express their own opinion. Each human being is unique and needs a different approach. Most important is that we build a foundation of trust and respect so your NLP Coach can challenge you where appropriate.

Would you be able to provide a sample discovery coaching session?

Yes. Matrix recommends that anyone looking for a personal coach to make use of our free discovery telephone session. This gives you a good idea about our coach’s style and you can feel if they are the right person to support you.

Many people like to book a one hour face to face session, before committing to a coaching package. This enables you to get a good sense of who your personal coach is and how coaching will benefit you.

What is the frequency of Coaching required?

This depends on the goals of each unique client, their current situation and the size of the gap between those two. It’s common that clients have one coaching session a week initially to kick-start their development and then fewer and fewer as they reach their goals. A once a month coaching session to keep on the right track and stay highly motivated is often used to achieve sustainable change.

How long will it take to get results?

Our coaching is tailor made, not pre-packaged, so the time required will depend on your individual circumstances. In general we recommend a minimum period of three months. We can advise you on what is likely to be most suitable for your particular circumstances.

How about our Coaching process when I am on holidays / traveling?

When away on business trips or holidays it is possible to coach via telephone or Skype.

During your holidays it might be useful to skip the coaching sessions, as completely free time is very healthy. And if you want, we can arrange exercises for you to do while away. It is very insightful to contemplate on certain aspects of your life, while being at a physical distance of your normal life. This allows us to observe things in a different matter which can have profound consequences.

What is your session cancellation policy and notice required?

Cancellation with less than 24 hours notice – the full fee for that session is due.

Cancellations with more than 24 hours notice, Matrix Coaching will offer an alternative appointment that week whenever possible.

Our partnership continues until you say that you have achieved all you want to achieve.

How will I know if Coaching is right for me?

To know if you would benefit from coaching, think about what you expect to accomplish from a coaching program. If you have a fairly clear idea of the desired outcome, coaching will be useful for developing a strategy for achieving that outcome with greater ease.

Since coaching is a partnership, ask yourself if you find it valuable to collaborate, to have another viewpoint and to be asked to consider new perspectives. How can I ensure an effective Coaching partnership?

Within the partnership, what is the role of the Coach and the client?

The coach’s role is to provide objective assessment and observations that foster the client’s awareness of self and others, to listen closely in order to understand the client’s circumstances, and be a sounding board in support of future thinking, planning and decision making. The coach champions the client’s potential and encourages, challenges and fosters new thinking. The coach maintains professional boundaries in the coaching relationship, including confidentiality, and adheres to the coaching profession’s code of ethics.

The role of the client is to create the coaching agenda by bringing their goals, using the observations of the coach to enhance their self-awareness and, and taking responsibility for their decisions and actions. They need to use the coaching process to promote fresh perspectives, take action to achieve their goals, and use the skills of the coach to bring about change.

How can the success of the Coaching process be measured?

Measurement may be thought of in two distinct ways. First, there are the external indicators of performance which can be seen in the client’s environment. Second, there are internal indicators of success which can be measured by the client with the support of the coach.

Examples of external measures include achievement of coaching goals established at the outset, personal and/or business performance data.

Examples of internal measures include changes in the client’s awareness of self and others, and shifts in thinking which inform more effective actions.

An International Coach Federation survey (2009) of over 2,000 coaching clients from 64 countries reported that individuals who have worked with a coach experience positive change in the following areas: self esteem/self confidence; relationships; communication skills; interpersonal skills; work performance; work/life balance; wellness; career opportunities; personal organization; business management; time management; team effectiveness; corporate culture; financial organization; and investment planning. Almost all (96%) clients indicated that they would repeat the coaching experience given the same circumstances that lead them there in the first place.

Although not all types of coaching lead to measurable financial gain, the survey suggested that a client who achieves a financial benefit from coaching can typically expect an ROI in the range of 344% or 3.44 times the amount spent. The median company return is 700% indicating that typically a company can expect a return of 7 times the initial investment.

Is Coaching a sound investment?

Working with a coach requires a personal commitment of time and energy as well as a financial commitment. Clients should consider both the desired benefits as well as the anticipated length of time to be spent in coaching. Since the coaching relationship is predicated on clear communication, any financial concerns or questions should be voiced in initial conversations before the agreement is made.

There have been a number of independent studies showing the effectiveness and return on investment of coaching.

Are the Coaching sessions confidential?

Yes.  All client information is kept with the coach.  On completion of the coaching relationship the coach returns all of their notes to the client to shred.  This is also symbolic as the client is no longer the same person who started the coaching process.
